“As ever at the start of the new academic year we are welcoming new staff to Fyling Hall.” So began our Headmaster’s update to parents prior to the start of the 2021-22 academic year.  Mr Allen’s update continued. . . . Mrs Jeeves starts her maternity leave until Easter and we wish her all the best. As cover, I am delighted to welcome Ms Corrigan and Ms Havelock to the staff. Ms Corrigan will oversee […]

If we have learnt one thing from Covid, it is that our health is so important. The staff at Fyling Hall School have taken this opportunity to increase their health and fitness and are taking part in a walking challenge.  The staff have been put into teams of 4, with teams selected at random. The first team to collectively reach 1.2 million steps is the winner! With names like “Red Hot Chilli Steppers” and “The Hotsteppers” […]

As Dame Vera Lynn said: “The words ‘We’ll meet again‘ speak to the hope we should all have during these troubling times”. It is a message of inspiration during the current crisis. Fyling Hall staff have their own messages of inspiration. We are certainly missing you. We cannot wait until we’ll meet again, and the school bell rings once more.

Mr Instone’s interview

Have you seen Mr Instone’s interview? Fyling Hall’s esteemed Head of Physics was interviewed about the VIC20 club, and it’s gone viral in the retro computing community. Watch Mr Instone on the Chickenhead Chronicles during which he talks about his VIC-20 club. You will recall that the club introduces pupils to BASIC programming and recreates what it was like using computers back in the eighties. Watch the tour of the classroom and discuss the VIC-20, […]

Starting as an English teacher

I’m Natasha Milner, and I will be starting work as an English teacher at Fyling Hall School in September. It’s been a dream of mine to work at Fyling Hall ever since I visited Robin Hood’s Bay on a family day out around 15 years ago. We love walking, so were following a public footpath through the school and I remember saying, ‘I would love to work here.’ And here I am, all these years later! At […]

Meet our new Head of English

I have been teaching English for almost twenty years; a career that has taken me from Italy to the far east and back to the UK where I have been working since 2007. Before relocating to North Yorkshire in 2015, I worked for seven years at a boarding school in Berkshire as an English teacher and housemaster and ran clubs ranging from Italian to Latin to music and drama. Since my wife and I decided […]

Proud of the adults these former pupils have become

Upon arrival, I was captured by the beauty before me; the panoramic view offered as your car drives over the hump on Sledgates, is truly breathtaking. I am sure the school must have a hotline to the local meteorological site to ensure that potential new staff see it at its finest. From that moment, I was captivated by the school’s uniqueness, it felt like somewhere I could grow to love. I had agreed to be […]

Endeavouring to give the children the same experiences I had . . .

Little did I know, as I walked down the drive into the grounds of Fyling Hall School, in April 1998, that this is where my adventure would begin. I was shown to my classroom by Mrs Pauline Birchall (the head of Fyling Hall Junior school, formally known as White Hall) where a group of friendly faces stared back at me. I can still remember the shock of seeing a classroom with old wooden desks in […]

Gigging Staff . . .

Ever wondered what staff get up in their spare time?  Quite of few of ours form a 9-piece function band called Back in the Habit.  They play music ranging from Soul, to Funk, and Rock to Pop.  Band members include. . . . Miss Johnson provides vocals. Ms Hornung is on piano. Mr Whittaker plays guitar (not only teaching it at FHS!). Mr Williams, who occasionally helps us with sound and lighting in the Barn, […]

A Day in the Life of . . . . a French speaking rugby player?

When I walked down the drive to school in September 1987, I could never have imagined I would still be teaching here some 30 years later. I arrived fresh from a post graduate year in Hull and had never had any interest in teaching in the private sector. I had gone through the comprehensive system in Leeds in a school with 1,500 pupils, and boarding school life was completely alien to me. I arrived in […]
