Fyling Hall’s Year 13 pupils are celebrating a successful return to the first externally assessed national examinations since 2019. The class of 2022 achieved a pass rate of 100% with 58% of exams entered being awarded the top grades (A*/A or equivalent), against a national average of 36.4%. Headmaster, Mr Allen, commented, “Year 13 pupils all over the country have had to endure one of the most challenging exam seasons ever. The cancellation of GCSE’s […]
May and June in senior schools around the UK are a nerve-wracking time for 15-18 year-olds as they sit their GCSE and A level exams. These exams hold the key to continued study in the sixth form or further education at University. This period is equally challenging for their staff. All teachers worry about how well their candidates will do under exam pressure but more so this year as this group of pupils are the […]
After spending around 6 months with my guitar tutor Paul Whittaker, my first EP is now available to listen on musical steaming platform such as Apple music and YouTube music. The EP is called “Long Story Short“, and it is a summary of major things which happened in my life that lead to changes in my thoughts and opinions. I composed all the songs, and record and produced it in the music studio at school […]
In the last week of the Spring Term the Year 12 girls maths students visited Newcastle University, taking part in the SUMS (Steps to University for Mathematical Students) enrichment day. When we first arrived at the university in the morning, we were given a lecture which discussed topics including university applications, different types of maths related degrees and the jobs they can lead you to, plus additional requirements for studying maths at university – such […]
Surviving and thriving in the outside world after school, after Sixth Form, isn’t just about qualifications. It isn’t just about getting a university place, an apprenticeship or a job. It’s about who you know, how you meet them and how you get on with them: it’s about how you can build and sustain relationships with people. These are really important skills and we believe it’s vital that our young people develop them. This week I […]
This week we invited parents to A Focus on Sixth Form, an event designed to discuss with our A Level teachers the details of studying with us post-16. The benefits of having their children continue their educational journey with us were well known by them. With every parent I spoke to, one or more of those key differentiators was the reason for them sending their child to be with us in the first place. It […]
We would like to invite you to our Black-Tie event for an intimate evening of fine dining and entertainment at Fyling Hall on Friday 11th March starting at 6:30pm. The invite is open to all staff and parents as well as family and friends from outside of school who would like to join. A three-course meal will be served, and during the night entertainment will be provided by some of our music students. The Rosette […]
With the latest cake bake sale pending, it was spatulas and mixing bowls at the ready for our boarding staff and pupils as they prepared their contributions for the charity fundraiser the following day. An eclectic array of cakes and cupcakes were prepared and decorated by staff and students alike. An ambitious ‘tiger cake’ symbolic of the Lunar New Year, the year of the tiger, was the centrepiece of the afternoon. If the mess was […]
This term we are extremely excited for the upcoming events we have planned, and they will hopefully bring us closer to our fundraising goal of £5,000. Funds will be split between NeoAngels, Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary, and Fyling Hall School. After quite an unexpected couple of years we were very pleased when we were allowed to go ahead with all our events last term, a quiz night, a Halloween Walk, and Santa Dash, to name a […]
As you move up to sixth form, you have to think about the future, such as universities or other options like direct employments or apprenticeship. Regardless of what you choose, it is always good to be prepared and well-informed. Today, I give you “Applying to uni: not-so-simple guide”, i.e. the fundamental parts of uni admission in the UK. First you need to know what UCAS is. UCAS is a central system where everyone who wishes […]
The Sixth Form / teacher meal was a fun activity. Taking place at Moutreys in Whitby, it was a good chance to get a better connection with the teachers and the same went for the teachers. In my opinion I feel like it should be an activity that should happen at least once each term. Our Sixth Form have been organising events around school to try to get back to a more “normal” way of life. Previous events have been a quiz night and a cake sale. The most recent was a Hallowe’en event and Joe tells us all about it. In the last week of our first half term a spooky aura beset the woods surrounding Fyling Hall. As students prepared for the eerie Fyling Hall Hallowe’en tour, shrieks […]
Last night saw the start to this year’s fundraising . . . although, strictly speaking, this first event was not a money raising event. It was more about everyone in the school community getting together, from the junior school parents and teachers to the senior parents and teachers. “After such a crazy couple of years we feel like this has been long awaited,” commented head students, Josh and Liv. The quiz night was hosted by […]
As the newly appointed Head Girl and Head Boy, we wanted to start the academic year off updating you on just a few of our upcoming events that we have planned. We have set ourselves a target of raising £5000 over the next academic year to be split between our chosen charities and funds for school (to be decided). The charities we have chosen are Neoangels a charity close to Olivia’s heart, who help support […]
In their last week at Fyling Hall, our Sixth Formers took the opportunity turn the tables on those they’ve come to look up to as mentors. Teachers are often the ones asking students the hard-hitting questions, not the other way around. Aside from the little information they might share in class, students don’t really get to do much asking. Now they ask these four questions: What’s the best thing about being a teacher? What was your most embarrassing […]
Thinking ahead to next year and preparing for university or the world of work Yr12 have been taking part in activities to help them sell themselves effectively through their personal statement or cv. Pupils worked in teams to draw their ‘perfect’ student, the ideal person to benefit from university life. As you can see they came up with some very creative ideas representing sporting skills, looking after the environment, tolerance of others beliefs’, independence, organisation, […]
Gaining valuable life skills is a key benefit of work placements. Just over a year ago Fyling Hall’s now Head Girl, Phoebe, commenced her work placement at Pinkney Grunwells Lawyers LLP. Written shortly after her placement, Phoebe kindly shares her experience and makes the case for gaining valuable life skills, which also provided her with great content on her recent UCAS application. My work experience was guided by the solicitor, Amy Arnold, who is also […]
This year’s A Focus on Sixth Form was the third of its kind. Presented by our Headmaster, Mr Allen, our Deputy Head, Academics, Dr Richardson and our Head of Sixth Form, Ms Mitchell, the event was held virtually due to the current lockdown. Multiple sessions allowed for a more engaging and interactive session. As in previous years, parents and students were guided through all aspects of Sixth Form including subjects & timetabling, results, university application, […]
With this year’s UCAS submission date now passed, Fyling Hall’s Year 13s have taken another step in preparing for university life. With ten successfully completed applications, students have applied for a great variety of courses form Business in Brighton to Astrophysics in St Andrews to Interior Design Northumbria and Material Science in Swansea. Already several students have received offers from all over the country for courses starting in September. The Year 13 are now using […]
Olivia, one of Fyling Hall’s year 12 students taking Biology as one of her A-levels, shares how “online learning has made me more independent.” This latest lockdown has been very different to the first one, as I was only sampling subjects for my A-Levels and there was not much pressure. However, this lockdown I have been required to do all of my work remotely, but thankfully daily online lessons have allowed me to keep up […]
Fyling Hall’s Sixth Form are delighted with their fundraising. With the last day of the Autumn Term as the final fundraising push, it was the perfect excuse to everyone to get out their Christmas jumpers. Students were asked to contribute £1 if wearing a jumper and £2 if not. Of course, donations were optional, particularly after such generosity over the term. Throughout the term, Fyling Hall students have supported Anthony Nolan’s Hero Project both in […]
It is time to get out your Christmas Jumper! On our last day of the Autumn Term, pupils are invited to donate £1 if wearing a jumper and £2 if they prefer a non-uniform day. As before, additional donations are most welcome, and all proceeds go to Anthony Nolan’s Hero Project. Following a term of fundraising, Head Girl, Phoebe Russell added, Thank you for your amazing efforts not only with our recent cake sale, but […]
What an amazing cake sale! When Fyling Hall’s Sixth Form put their fundraising plans in motion, they never anticipated the response. So many cakes were kindly donated that the event lasted three days and raised over £550 pounds. You will recall that all of the funds are going to the Anthony Nolan charity, who support Junior School pupil, Evie. Headmaster, Mr Allen, commented, It was great to see all elements of school pulling together. I […]
Continuing our plan to enable Y11 students to make the best possible decisions about their future, Dr Richardson, Deputy Head, Academics and Ms Mitchell, Head of Sixth Form spoke with our Year 11 students about future options. It was also an opportunity the students to raise any queries they may have. “We felt is important to speak directly with our current Year 11s about their options for next year. Of course, we very much hope […]
It is only November but already many of you and your children are already thinking of options for next year, after the completion of GCSEs. In previous years, to enable our students to make the best possible decisions about their future, we have held A Focus on Sixth Form, an information evening in school. The session is designed to provide insight into all aspects of Sixth Form including the courses available and a flavour of […]
Will you please help with our Cake Sale? Following our successful Halloween event before half term, we the Sixth Form are keen to raise further funds for Anthony Nolan’s Hero Project. To increase our total raised, we have organized a Cake Sale on 30th November, during the morning break (from 10.45 to 11.05). Please will you supply cakes for the event? We have also asked some local bakeries for their support, but given lockdown, their donations cannot be guaranteed. Our […]
What a fantastic Halloween event! Students came suitably dressed for the occasion with generous donations in hand. Later in the afternoon, pumpkins were carved, mummies made and all took part in a virtual quiz officiated by our Head Boy, Archie. Many thanks to (Ms Mitchell) and the Sixth Form, we all had a good time staff, students and pupils. We needed a bit of a cheer up after this busy half term! Please pass on […]
Time to get out your Halloween costume . . . next Thursday, 22nd October is a non-uniform day! With opportunities for fundraising limited, Fyling Hall’s Sixth Form propose a non-uniform day to raise much needed funds. This follows a very informative assembly supported by Anthony Nolan. Their education programme, the Hero Project, is aimed at teaching 16–18-year-olds about the importance of donating stem cells, blood and organs. The importance of the Hero Project and others like […]
You have the potential and power to save someone’s life. We want to make 16-18 year olds aware that they can do something incredible . . . not to pressure; not to persuade. You can make a huge difference to another person. This was the message delivered by the blood cancer charity, Anthony Nolan, at todays’ Sixth Form Assembly. Head Girl, Phoebe Russell, organised and led the session which served as the launch of further […]

Under normal circumstances Fyling Hall’s Year 12s would be starting the application process for University within the next few weeks. A key part of the preparation, in previous years, has been a visit to the Newcastle/Northumbria Universities’ open day in June. Clearly things will be different this year however, Year 12 Tutors, Mr Thomas and Mrs Banks, have already encouraged their tutor groups to research courses and universities and carried out some activities to help […]
Auditions. The one day that can make or break your chance of getting into university for a drama based subject. For most, when auditioning for university they all expect the same thing from you. You should work well in a group, perform your monologue confidently (which is a lot harder than you would think, trust me) and be confident enough to try and do anything they ask of you. So what to expect on the […]
Fyling Hall’s first Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is well and truly underway in Sixth Form. Ailsa has researched, shadowed professionals and created an extensive journalistic sketchbook to preempt the making of an ambitious tutu inspired by her love of dance and specifically ballet. This remarkable journey has required self motivation and determination to produce such an outstanding practical piece. The benefits of a completing an EPQ have proven to be more than our students had […]

To kick off Fyling Hall’s reinvigorated Sixth Form, all Sixth Formers took part in a two day “bonding” trip, accompanied by Headmaster, Mr Allen, Mr Mayne and myself. The purpose of our two days was to have time away from lessons to get to know our new students, from other schools and abroad, and to integrate them into the Sixth Form and encourage them to see themselves as part of a team. Based at the […]
Fyling Hall School’s enhanced Sixth Form offering is taking shape. July saw the appointment of Jane Mitchell as the Head of Sixth Form. This week saw the announcement of the Sixth Form’s initial enrichment trip. With more in the pipeline, it is sure to be an exciting year. Ms Mitchell extended role was announced in early July. Building on the tailored programme rolled out in February 2019, she will ensure that each child’s experience in […]
I am pleased to share with you Fyling Hall’s 2019-20 option blocks for A Level. One of our strengths is that we build a programme to suit our current pupils’ preferred subject choices. The timetable is then built around these blocks. That said, we appreciate that results day is looming and therefore, there is still some room for manoeuvre. Combined with our new ideas for the Sixth Form under the guidance of Ms Mitchell, I […]
Supplementing our pupils’ time in the classroom is a key priority at Fyling Hall. Learning outside of the classroom is important at every stage of school life, but it is particularly important for our Sixth Formers. This is their chance to broaden their A-Level programme and to develop skills which will help them to stand out when applying for further education courses. We are pleased to share our enhanced Sixth Form Enrichment Programme which will […]
We are delighted with last week’s a Focus on Sixth Form. Current Fyling Hall Year 11 & 10 parents and students attended the evening held on 15th November. The objective was to navigate through the daunting process of choosing a Sixth Form. Meet Your Teachers There was hardly room to stir as A-Level teachers offered practical insight into the Russell’s Group ‘facilitating’ and ‘specialised’ subjects; the best option for university entry. With the support […]
The role of both Head Boy and Girl is the highest reward that can be given to a pupil and plays a pivotal role in not only in the Sixth Form, but all of school life. Since Fyling Hall was established in 1923 the Head pupils have been appointed each year at the end of year Prize giving. The selection is always difficult and the views of both pupils and staff are sought before a decision is […]
