Pi Day is a long established tradition

Pi Day is a long established tradition, taking on the US-based date system of month-day giving us the first three digits of pi: 3.14 on the 14th March. This year’s event at Fyling Hall was another very successful and popular event with some very accurate estimates of pi to within 5% of the actual value. The class followed a method from Matt Parker of Numberphile.com.  All of Year 9 came together and were split into 5 […]

Taking full advantage of the fine weather, our Year 9 Maths students were presented with the task of counting all the clover flowers on the Main House lower terrace. The initial plan had been to count daisies but the ever active gardeners had mown my specimens. The group was divided into 3 teams, provided with metre sticks and had then to work out a method of counting. The groups needed to use initiative,  cooperation, problem […]

Revision is an active process and just looking over your exercise book is not the best way to revise. Here Yr9 are taking part in a revision circus trying problems covering a range of topics. They are working […]

When did you last think about the value of Pi? International Day of Mathematics, also known as Pi Day, is on 14th March, i.e. 3/14. As this falls on a Sunday this year, we celebrated this great day, as we always do at Fyling Hall, in school on Friday.  Year 9s worked in smaller groups and substituted counters for real pies to calculate the value of Pi. They produced some excellent and accurate results. It […]

It has been a busy week in maths with nearly 30 students from Years 9, 10 and 11 taking part in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge. This challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.  The problems on the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience. There was some serious practise undertaken before […]

Fyling Hall’s Year 9s have been getting creative in maths. They have been exploring the connections between 3D and 2D shapes. They have learnt about nets, plans, elevations and using isometric paper to represent 3D shapes. This linked perfectly with the work some of them have been doing in design where they have made a 3D shapes from its net. As you know we always love to look for links between maths and other subjects. […]

Fyling Hall’s Year 10s are investigating graphs through the web-based tool, Desmos. This graphics calculator allows students to analyse and solve complex problems. They are also able to check results, visualise solutions and present functions graphically. With Desmos’ objective of spreading the joy of maths, our pupils spent less time thinking about technology and more time investigating graphs and thinking about maths!
