Investigating tourism in Geography

Investigating tourism in Geography

Posted · Add Comment

Once again, the year 9 geography groups have been investigating tourism. Two years ago, we were in lockdown at this time so I decided that a good activity would be to create an iconic landmark from a chosen city/country. As it worked so well I decided to keep doing this activity, and this year the year 9s did not disappoint. The same rules applied. No writing or just drawing the chosen landmark. Instead they were […]

Great scope to travel the world virtually

Great scope to travel the world virtually

Geography offers great scope to travel the world virtually – a necessity over the last couple of years! It enables pupils to gain insights into how others live, and to investigate how different, and similar, we truly are. My GCSE and A Level groups tend to be inquisitive about the world (probably why they chose the subject in the first place!) and they will often question what they read, not just accept it as fact. […]

Year 11s out to do some fieldwork

Year 11s out to do some fieldwork

After a couple of unusual years, I finally managed to get my year 11s out to do some fieldwork. It seemed a little odd sitting in the minibus once again, on our way to a river, equipment in hand. The day had an Autumnal chill to it but it was dry and that was the main thing. There is nothing worse than standing in a river taking measurements while the rain slowly gets you wetter […]

The Geography of Crime

The last topic that year 7 studied in Geography was ‘The Geography of Crime’! They looked at where crimes occur, what types of crimes there are, how criminals are deterred and how crimes can be stopped. Year 7 acted as detectives to solve a crime. A most heinous wrongdoing took place at Flying Hall School and one million pounds was stolen! Some of the prime characters are the headmaster, Mr Cranky, his secretary Ms Brownie, […]

How might Geography students put their creativity to the test? Fyling Hall’s Head of Geography, Miss Gilmour, shares some examples from Years 7 and 9. Take a look! Year 7s Our most recent, and still current, topic is population. Year 7 have been learning all about how populations change over time and the reasons behind those changes. I thought it would be interesting to then let them all create their own country, thinking about matters […]

Never has Geography been more applicable than now

Never has Geography been more applicable than now

It is interesting to note that never has Geography been more applicable than now, right this minute. As a species, we are constantly striving to make sense of this world we call home. The use of fossil fuels and whether we should have stopped using them last century. The development of clean, public transport and how to make it sustainable. Food miles, energy use, access to drinking water and sanitation, global trade agreements, our personal […]

The most popular topic of conversation

Weather is the most popular topic of conversation in the UK, even the world. Mark Twain said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it”. Weather falls within the realm of geography. We all rely on this planet that we call home. We are dependent on infrastructures, ecosystems, communications, trade agreements, and such. So aren’t we all geographers? A stuffy image Geography is one of the most relevant and compelling subjects today. […]

Did you name the country? Last week we shared our Year 9 Geography pupils’ fantastic models. You will recall that pupils created a model based upon their study of tourism. Miss Gilmour set them the task of choosing a city/country/region and depicting it in a model. Pupils were asked not to just paint or draw, and could use any materials they chose. Well done to all of our Year 9 Geography pupils! Scroll down for […]

How about this for a thought provoking geography question? Never one to shy from the big questions, Miss Gilmour, Fyling Hall’s Head of Geography, asked our Sixth Formers to answer . . . As a geographer, if I could change one thing about the world, it would be . . . “… illegal and uncontrolled logging because it is the biggest threat to civilisation. How can people cut down and destroy the ‘lungs of the […]

In today’s Geography lessons . . .

As you might expect, no two geography lessons are the same, especially when you are teaching across a range of year groups. In today’s Geography lessons Yr 9 gave their presentations on African countries. Next year 7s tried to solve a crime! Working in groups of 3, they had to read through lots of clues to try and work out who stole the money! And last week, Miss Gilmour’s Y10s practised the art of sketching […]

GCSE Geography Exam Preparation

In preparation for their GCSE geography exam, on the last day before exams the year 11s visited Falling Foss where they undertook a river study. They visited several sections along the river, collecting data on the width depth and speed of the river at each section. Working together, they gathered the necessary information, reminding themselves of why they were doing each one. In June, they will sit an exam on these very techniques and the justification […]

At the end of last term the year 7s began investigating the topic of crime. As part of that, today they completed a crime prevention survey around school, to see how safe it is. They graded areas, according to whether they had cameras, alarms, locks and so on. Thy also worked on a few suggestions to improve the most vulnerable areas and this will continue next week. Hopefully, they may come up with some ideas […]

In readiness for Geography paper 3 year 11s recently went through their resource booklet. The issue under investigation is tropical rainforests. The group are allowed the resource booklet in advance of the exam, because there is a lot of content to get through. We discuss the varied resources (maps, graphs, photos, information) and try to work out what the main issue is. Tropical rainforests are an extremely important resource for us all globally, and there […]

The geography of football?

Year 9s recently investigated the geography of football. On first reading that you may wonder what that has to do with geography but look closer and you will see. Geographical skills were needed as pupils used atlases to discover the many places footballs pass through, in their journey from Pakistan to the U.K.  We will investigate which countries have won the World Cup and whether these wins are linked to a country’s level of development. […]
