Daily Pupils
Why Fyling Hall?
Fyling Hall has a long tradition of providing Independent education for daily pupils in the Whitby and Scarborough area. We are a small school with a friendly, family atmosphere, where pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We understand that deciding to educate your child in an Independent School is a big decision for parents, but we hope that the nurturing and inspiring environment we provide will help make this decision a little easier.
“I am well supported by my teachers in all of my subjects. Furthermore, all teachers are always happy to offer their advice and help anytime.” (Current Year 13 pupil)
Pastoral Care
Our daily pupils are fully integrated and supported in all areas of school life. Due to our size, strong relationships can be forged between the staff and pupils and this allows us to meet the individual needs of each child. Pupils quickly come to feel part of our community, and this is the key to the family- like atmosphere. Providing guidance, support, advice and a safe environment, encourages our pupils to be independent and play an active role in school life. We strive to create a relaxed, yet purposeful learning environment, where everyone can express themselves and fulfil their potential.
“The pupils’ personal development is outstanding; from the earliest age they are willing to take on responsibility. Older pupils look after younger ones and the whole school community works as a large family.” (ISI Inspection)
Academic
Fyling Hall provides academic stability and consistency for your child. We aim to identify and develop the potential of all our students providing them with a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum enriched by a range of extra-curricular activities which make learning enjoyable and rewarding. As a non-selective school, we are very proud of our academic achievements. Our consistently positive value added examination results highlight the hard work and expertise of our staff. Small class sizes allow the teachers to get to know the individual needs of each pupil and help to create a learning environment that will suit and challenge them.
“Teaching throughout the school is excellent and is highly effective in promoting pupils’ learning, achievement and progress.” (ISI Inspection)
Enrichment
At Fyling Hall we enhance our pupils academic and personal experiences by offering a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Guest speakers and master classes bring lessons that are taught in the classroom to life. Music and drama productions both in school and out in the community provide pupils with the chance to take to the stage. Visits to places of cultural interest are regularly organised throughout the year and subjects incorporate out of school visits, both locally and nationally, to reinforce learning.
Location
We are located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, with 45 acres of countryside, sports fields and woodland. We have a spectacular coastal setting and we are a 10 minute drive from the world famous fishing port of Whitby. This safe and beautiful environment plays an important role in all aspects of school life and provides an excellent backdrop to allow your children to learn, grow and develop.
“One highlight of Fyling Hall is the opportunity to meet different people from all over the world, from many different backgrounds. Also, unlike in some bigger schools, older students have a good relationship with younger students.” (Current Year 12 pupil)
Breakfast and Homework Club
Home life can be busy and we offer both a breakfast and homework club to try and help with this. If you need to, you can drop your child off early where they can join the boarding pupils for breakfast. Rather than worry about homework when your child gets home, they could attend our homework club which is supervised by a teacher who is there to offer assistance.
Activities
At Fyling Hall, we provide a diverse extra-curricular and weekend activity programme, which provides opportunities for new experiences and keeps our students busy. There is a late bus to both Scarborough and Whitby to enable participation in the after school programme and all weekend activities are open to our daily students. Sport, music, drama and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme are at the core of our extra-curricular programme but additional academic subjects and specialist clubs such as climbing, board games, craft club to mention a few ensure that there is something for everyone. Weekends are action packed: shopping, fell running, cinema, paintball, surfing, mountain biking, rambling and canoeing all featuring regularly on the programme. See the activities section for more information.
Travel
We run daily buses from both Whitby and Scarborough and both have regular stops which means there should be a stop that will cater for your needs. For those pupils who wish to take part in after school activities or attend our homework club there is an additional bus at 17:30 to both Whitby and Scarborough. The route and timetable for the buses are available from the school office.
