Curriculum Enrichment

Enrichment all is about improving the quality and breadth of the education we offer and dramatically enhancing the value of our students’ time with us.

Fyling Hall in an enriching place: a peaceful location, nestled just below the woods and the moors, overlooking the sea. The air is fresh and always feels full of possibilities. This prime location gives us massive advantages in a host of enriching opportunities taking advantage of the natural environment with cycling, horse riding, running, walking, orienteering and exploring on the moors, in the woods and by the sea.

We offer visits, both local and national, for cultural, historical, geographical, scientific, artistic as well as entertaining experiences. Teams from school take part in sports fixtures and tournaments as well as other educational based modern language, mathematical or technology focused competitions (where we often win!).

Our enrichment programme is delivered through our Tutor Group system as well as assemblies and what we call Learning For Life sessions which encompasses the governments PSHE directives but goes further into learning metacognitive learning, communication, presentation and debate skills as well as enhancing critical thinking, resilience and well-being – the vital skills for children growing up in today’s world.

Our clubs and societies run after school covering a range of extra-curricular activities including Latin, Philosophy, Poetry, Computer coding, Art incl Photography as well as a wide variety of Sport, Fitness, Film and Book clubs. We work closely with the North York Moors Young Rangers programme conducting regular, bespoke sessions. We also offer homework prep, English and Maths support groups for those that need extra one-to-one interventions and guidance.

Student performances in music (soloists, classical, choir and Rock School), poetry and drama form a main part of the school year where our students perform both in-school concerts and recitals as well as in local theatres, all events open to the public.

Our Sixth Form take part in our Reading Buddy system to support reading with younger pupils. They also volunteer in our Junior School, adding they wisdom to the experience of the juniors and well as gaining vital learning themselves.

Our boarding community has a programme of weekend events that are open to day pupils too. On site we have run Laser Quest in the woods, sports, games and films as well as model making with our 3D printer and Raspberry pi computer projects. Off site we have regular trips to activities such as go-karting, ices skating and swimming or visits to nearby towns and cities including York and the various beaches round us, including beach sweeps whenever we can.

We have a range of visiting experts from music, philosophy to astronomy and careers, who give talks or run hands-on sessions for our students. Recently visits haven’t been possible due to the pandemic situation so we put together an online ‘chat show’ with visiting experts giving us themed tasks along with their insights. You can view all the shows on our YouTube channel. If you know of an expert who could offer something to our students, in person or via video, please do get in touch.
