FLYING HIGH AT FYLING HALL

20th April 2012

Fyling Hall is celebrating after receiving its latest inspection report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The inspection team, who spent four days in the school, drew their conclusions after observing lessons, conducting interviews with pupils and examining pupils’ work.

Science trip to Low Farm

Last Sunday Michael O'Sullivan (Year 10) set himself the challenge of completing a full marathon on one of the school's rowing machines as part of the school's Pink Week fundraising efforts.

A concert took place on Saturday 28th April in Eskdale School in aid of the Whitby charity InterActive.

pink WEEK

7th May 2012

Pupils at Fyling Hall have been raising funds this week for breast cancer awareness. On Monday the school staged its own 'Race for Life' with all the pupils (and some teachers brave enough to take the pupils on) taking part in a sponsored three mile run.

Danby moors

7th May 2012

On Friday 4th May the year 8s visited Danby Moors Centre where they did some map work. The day was very wet but the staff at the centre supplied wellies and waterproof coats so that everyone could stay dry and enjoy the day.

Carnegie Book Award 2012

6th May 2012

This year Fyling Hall School is joining other schools in the area in shadowing the Carnegie Book Award. The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children.

CSI Dinosaur

5th May 2012

Forms 1and 2 in the Juniors enjoyed a very exciting geology workshop last week with our visiting expert Mike Windle. The pupils examined local fossils from three different periods, and discussed the evidence about the past gathered from these clues.

Junior School Geonaut Activities

Year 7 in a Giant Bubble

19th April 2012

In science we have been studying solids, liquids and gases. We thought it would be fun to try and surround a Year 7 child in a thin sphere of liquid enclosing air or another gas - a Giant Bubble.

Beach visit

Forms 1 and 2 in the Juniors had an exciting trip to the beach on Monday to hunt for fossils, in the company of Mike Windle from the NE Geology Trust.

Wine tasting

16th April 2012

This term saw another series of wine tasting evenings, which were followed by a classic film and takeaway pizzas. The Friday evening events were very popular with the sixth form students who attended, learning to smell and taste many wines from all over the world.

Spring Concert and Easter Activities

The pupils in F2 had a very enjoyable educational visit to the Captain Cook Museum in Whitby last week, where they studied artefacts, maps, portraits and letters from Cook's time.

XTREME XSCAPE

6th March 2012

This weekend involved some Xtreme activities as the school visited Xscape in Castleford. Pupils spent their day bowling, climbing, playing laser tag, tackling the aerial assault course, skiing and snowboarding on the indoor slope and some even tried the new indoor surf machine.

U16 Girls Hockey Team Crowned District Champions

1st March 2012

After a long season of hard work and massive improvement, the under 16 girls hockey team were crowned Scarborough and District champions beating Lady Lumley's in the final on Wednesday evening.

Senior Football Match Report

The 1st XI football team travelled to Ampleforth to play their 2nd XI. On a very heavy pitch Fyling Hall started brightly pressing most of the play into the Ampleforth half.

London Trip

There are several words that could be used this year's trip to London. For example…bonkers, funny, musical, scary, adventurous, different, snowy, artistic, cultural. There is, however, one word that can be used to describe the entire experience - amazing!

Role reversal in year 10's french class

This week Ms Hornung became a pupil in Year 10’s French class as they tried out their teaching skills. They were tasked to produce a series of activities in order to practise the Perfect Tense in French.

Maths Challenge

23rd February 2012

On Thursday 2nd February, 30 students from years 9 – 11 braved the cold barn to participate in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. They had an hour to determine the solutions to 25 logical problem solving questions, losing marks if they chose the incorrect answer.

North Yorkshire League Volleyball at Fyling Hall

23rd February 2012

Volleyball has sparked a real interest at Fyling Hall. Since the beginning of February a two hour training session has been held at both Fyling Hall School and Whitby Community College. Students travel from afar - Stokesley, Danby Dale, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby, to join this oversubscribed club.

Falcons Flying High!

6th February 2012

On Sunday 29th January pupils from school travelled to watch the Newcastle Falcons take on Sale Sharks in the LV Cup at Kingston Park. In cold wet conditions the first half of the game was on a knife edge with both teams struggling to build any consistent pressure.

On Friday 27th January, our GCSE Business Studies class visited the local furniture business, Beevers in Whitby, for our research which counts towards our controlled assessment work.

CYCLING SUCCESS

31st January 2012

Aaron Preston (Year 7) has been putting in the miles on the road and track in a bid to be the next Mark Cavendish. Aaron managed an impressive top ten placing in the British Cycling National Rider ranking tables for his age group in 2011 and was also chosen to undertake some intensive training at the Manchester velodrome.

Form One’s Trip to the Post Office

On Tuesday 24th January Form One visited the delivery office in Whitby. Postman John showed us how the letters and parcels were sorted and where the letters for school were put before delivery.

A DAY IN THE CAPITAL...OF YORKSHIRE!

A number of our boarders enjoyed a day shopping in historic York. Whilst appreciating the wonders of this historic city, they also managed to take in the wonders of Starbucks and Pret a Manger!

Some of the boarders spent a fantastic afternoon on Sunday zipping around the karting track at Scarborough. It was also a baptism of fire for Aussie Joe who has certainly not been taking lessons from Mark Webber!

a splashing day at waterworld

On Saturday 14th January, the juniors went to Waterworld near York for a great fun day splashing about! Afterwards they went to the cinema to watch a variety of films ranging from War Horse to Puss in Boots.

year 9 study urban issues

The year 9s have recently been studying urban issues with the focus being on urban decay and the causes for this. As part of the topic, they have also been researching house prices in Whitby and why they differ.

volcanoes

9th January 2012

Towards the end of the Autumn term, the year 7s have been studying tectonics. They ended the topic by making their own volcanoes, which they did by using pvc glue, water, lots of paper and an empty bottle.

Our new Gap Student has arrived and is getting to know the Fyling Hall family and the unique ways we do things around here. Joe comes to us from St Joseph's College, Brisbane which is known locally as Gregory Terrace after the street in Brisbane in which it is found.

TIMES ARE GOOD...

...for Ryan Gibson in Year 11 who has been chosen as one of only 10 young cricketers in the country to join the England Cricket Board's development programme. Receiving specialist coaching from the likes of Graham Thorpe and Bruce French, Ryan is developing into an excellent cricketer and he is certainly one to watch for the future.
