Why Fyling Hall?

CJP_9987

Fyling Hall has a long tradition of not only educating but becoming a second home for children from Armed Forces families. We are a small school with a friendly family atmosphere, where pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We understand that deciding to educate your child at boarding school is a big decision for parents, but we hope that the nurturing and inspiring environment we provide will help make this decision a little easier.

‘ Throughout the boarding community there are strong relationships, between pupils themselves and with both boarding and academic staff. Boarders enjoy the company of others and have a strong sense of family, feeling like ‘sisters and brothers’ in a house with a real sense of belonging.’ (IS Inspection)

Pastoral Care

girls dormWhen away from home we think it is essential that your child feels part of a community and that their needs are always put first. Our boarding community forges strong relationships between the pupils and the staff and a real sense of family is created as a result. Providing guidance, support, advice and a safe environment for our boarders, encourages them to be independent and play an active role in all elements of school life. We strive to create a relaxed, yet purposeful homely environment, where everyone feels valued as individuals.

“Having come to Fyling hall, having never boarded before I didn’t know what to expect, but because of the size of the school and the family atmosphere, I found myself feeling at home , within several days. Boarding allows many occasions and opportunities to socialise with your friends, whether that’s inside school, in the sports hall or travelling to local theatres to see famous productions. Despite any preconceived ideas about boarding, I have tried more new things here , including things I never thought I would be able to.” (RAF Pupil)

Academic

Teaching throughout the school is excellent and is highly effective in promoting pupils’ learning, achievement and progress.” (IS Inspection)

Fyling Hall provides academic stability and consistency for your child. We aim to identify and develop the potential of all our students providing them with a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum enriched by a range of extra-curricular activities which make learning enjoyable and rewarding. As a non-selective school, we are very proud of our academic achievements. Our consistently positive value added examination results highlight the hard work and expertise of our staff. Small class sizes allow the teachers to get to know the individual needs of each pupil and help to create a learning environment that will suit and challenge them.

This is due to the small classes and the one on one time given to each student. For me the biggest help with my grades has come from all of the help I have received outside of lessons. Since most of the teachers live in they are always available and willing to help.” (Current pupil)

Location

horse on beachWe are located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, with 45 acres of countryside, sports fields and woodland. We have a spectacular coastal setting and we are a 10 minute drive from the world famous fishing port of Whitby. This safe and beautiful environment plays an important role in all aspects of school life and provides an excellent backdrop to allow your children to learn, grow and develop.

Continuity of Education Allowance

Fyling Hall is a long standing school on the Ministry of Defence Accredited Schools Database. This means you can apply to the Continuity of Education Allowance scheme if you wish for your child to join us. We are proud that our boarding fees for Armed Forces students fall under the maximum allowed by the Continuity of Education Allowance. This means as a parent, you would only need to pay the compulsory 10% contribution that is required according to the scheme. This could be as little as £650 per term for a senior student, however we also offer additional reductions for siblings.

 Armed Forces Childcare Vouchers

As a registered school (ID number: 820506) many of our Forces parents also use the Armed Forces Childcare Voucher Scheme. These vouchers can be used in many ways. For example, they could be used to contribute towards extra-curricular activities, private tuition and music lessons. This again can reduce your termly contribution towards school fees further and provide your child with many more opportunities.

After school activities & Weekend programme

JAt Fyling Hall, we provide a diverse extra-curricular and weekend activity programme which provides opportunities for new experiences and keeps our students busy. Sport, music, drama and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme are at the core of our extra-curricular programme but additional academic subjects and specialist clubs such as climbing, board games, craft club ensure that there is something for everyone. However there is always time to relax, and weekends are action packed: Shopping, fell running, cinema, paintballing, surfing, mountain biking, rambling and canoeing all feature regularly on the programme.

Keeping in Touch

In the modern world there are an ever increasing number of ways to keep in regular contact with your children. All the boarding houses have a phone line with a direct number; the office or duty master is always available to answer the main school number. Most mobile phone networks work around the school site and advice can be given about this if you should require it. The school site is covered by a wireless internet network which the pupils have access to. This makes email, Skype and social media a quick and easy way to contact your children. The school website is also updated regularly with all of the events going on around school, so you can regularly see what your children have been doing. Hopefully, when all of these methods of communication are combined, you too will feel like part of our community.

Travel

We are aware that Armed Forces families can be located all around the United Kingdom and indeed the world. Due to this, we try to remove the worry and stress of travelling to and from our school. We offer an escorted bus to Manchester airport and York railway station at the start and end of each term. At the start and end of every half term we escort to York Railway station and organise transfers to the airport by taxi. We will also endeavour to offer further assistance and guidance if you need to make travel arrangements outside of these services.

Taster Sessions

If you think you might like to board but are still not sure, why not try it? We are happy for you to come and stay with us for a day or even a week, so you can get a feel for Fyling Hall and boarding life. Just contact the school office to arrange a visit.
