Fyling Hall
has always been a non-selective school and is proud
of this.
All pupils with Special Educational Needs are considered
for admission, including those who have statements of
Special Educational Needs. All pupils are supported
by our dedicated staff so that they fulfil their potential.
Fyling Hall promotes an inclusive environment. Children
are given access to the whole curriculum, with differentiation
as appropriate. Pupils with Special Educational Needs
are catered for in all subject areas and specialist
teaching is also available, some of which is included
in the school fees.
School-based specialist teaching is provided by the
Head of Learning Support and two peripatetic SEN tutors
both of whom have a qualification in the teaching of
dyslexic pupils. Specialist teaching is delivered on
a 1:1 and group basis depending on the needs of each
child.
All pupils who receive additional support have an Individual
Education Plan and their needs are supported through
a graduated process according to the DCSF Code of Practice.
All pupils are screened on entry using standardised
tests in spelling, mathematics, reading comprehension,
single word reading, sentence completion and writing
speed. This detailed screening process informs us immediately
of any difficulties, which are then followed up and
planned for accordingly.
Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) are
an integral part of the Learning Support programmes.
Pupils are encouraged to discover how they learn, celebrate
their strengths, value their skills and talents, manage
their difficulties and behaviour, interact with others
in the classroom, build their confidence and self-esteem
and ultimately enjoy the learning process.
Here are some comments from some of our learners:
“The learning support staff are helpful,
friendly and nice to work with. Having extra support
has definitely helped me and improved my spelling in
particular.” Eve Year 11
“Teachers help you to achieve things that
you probably don’t believe that you can do yourself.
I was very happy when I got the results of my maths
exam and I could not have done that without Mrs Orchard
and Mrs Burton.” Robyn Year 10
“Learning Support is extremely friendly and
very helpful in lots of ways from basic spelling to
GCSE work.” Benjy Year 10
Parents interested in the support we offer are encouraged
to contact our Head of Learning Support, Mrs
Donna Orchard.
