Yorkshire Cricket

Many congratulations to Ryan Gibson (Year 12) who made his professional cricket debut for Yorkshire on Saturday. Ryan played for the county against Leicestershire at Scarborough, taking a wicket and scoring 4 not out. We’re all very proud of Ryan, and sure that this will be the first of many appearances.

Conservation on Fylingdales Moor

Students from Years 7 and 8 recently visited a conservation area on Fylingdales Moor on two science field trips. Both years are currently working on environmental topics in their science lessons, and the aim of the trips was to study the moorland habitat, the plants and animals found on the moors and the relationships between them. Pond Dipping

Form 2 in the Junior School had a lovely afternoon on Fylingdales Moor with Tanya Eyre from the Hawk and Owl Trust. The children were taught how to scoop creatures from the pond and place them in study containers. They then identified them using flow charts and spent some time sketching and discussing attributes. After that Tanya took the pupils for a short walk across the moors to notice features and to observe wildlife, including plants, birds and lizards. Next time we hope to spot adders…

Exploring the gardens

Last week Year 7 enjoyed a tour of the school gardens with Mr Stephenson. The aim was for the students to find out about the wide variety of wildlife in the gardens as part of their current topic on ‘Classification and Food Webs’. They learnt the names of some common garden plants and flowers, and were able to look at a blackbird nest and the oldest tree in the school grounds, a sycamore tree thought to be about 300 years old. We learnt that some areas of the garden have been left as wild areas where nettles will provide the perfect place for butterflies to lay their eggs, and that the gardeners do not use chemicals to control pests, preferring instead to encourage the pests’ natural predators into the garden to control them. Year 6 go IMP

When we arrived at Scarborough Hospital we met our IMPs’ teachers and children from Hackness School. IMPs stands for Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools. First we went to the Accident and Emergency department and sat in the children’s waiting area where we talked about how the nurses have to decide which people have urgent and less urgent problems. A former evacuee visits the Junior School

Form 2 in the Junior School enjoyed a lively and informative talk from Eve Harrison’s grandmother, Mrs Argument, who was evacuated from Teesside to Whitby during World War II. The pupils heard about Mrs Argument’s experiences of the hardships of rationing, and they were delighted to receive a packet of wartime sweeties at the end of the lesson!
